08/23/2018 5 p.m. HST – It was still so ‘clear’ you could see Mt. Hualalai.
08/23/2018 1 p.m. HST Weather Observations Kona: No rainfall yet. Partly cloudy skies.
Meanwhile, at the same time, 08/23/2018 NBC News reports: “Nearly 20 inches of rain fell on parts of Hawaii’s Big Island as a Category 4 hurricane approached the state on Thursday, closing a highway and causing landslides, and forecasters warned the islands would likely experience life-threatening effects even if they are not directly struck.”
Rain Shadow: Here is a link to the Hurricane Lane weather forecast from KHON2. Notice the ‘rain shadow’ during, at least, this part of the hurricane. Kona is frequently protected by the major mountains near our town: Mauna Kea at 13,803 ft, Mauna Loa at 13,679 ft, and, in our immediate backyard, Hualalai at 8,271 ft. In effect, for storms coming from the east, and sometimes from the south, the mountains block some/much of the rain.
