Are the Volcanoes Always Erupting in Hawaii?

No, the volcanoes in Hawaii are not always erupting. While Hawaii is known for its active volcanoes, including Kilauea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island, they do not erupt continuously.

Instead, these volcanoes typically experience periods of activity followed by periods of dormancy. During active periods, lava may flow from the volcanoes, and there may be ash and gas emissions. During dormant periods, the volcanoes are quiet and do not show any signs of activity.

Kilauea, for example, was in a state of eruption from 1983 to 2018, but has since been relatively quiet. Similarly, Mauna Loa’s previously most recent eruption was in 1984, and it erupted again in late 2022. While scientists monitor the volcanoes closely for signs of activity, there is no way to predict exactly when the next eruption will occur.
